Frey Brake Company has released a new 180×30 cam brake for production. The brake was developed in conjunction with a customer who was redesigning a military trailer. The new trailer carries heavier loads and puts an excessive demand on the previous mechanical parking brakes. Wanting to keep the wheel for the trailer unchanged, KBC was limited in the design envelope. KBC engineering was able to design a brake that was 3x more effective than the current brake while only increasing the drum brake diameter by 2mm. This was accomplished by using a new cam profile and modifying the lever configuration to maximize mechanical advantage while staying within the design envelope. The design was verified using test equipment at KBC and prototypes delivered to the customer for vehicle testing.
